This June, during Ocean Action Month, global attention has turned to 16 stadiums across North America for the FIFA World Cup, as record-breaking temperatures heat up host cities. The month-long event is on track to be the "most polluting" World Cup of all time, and Climate Central identified five stadiums most affected by human-caused climate change. And as millions of fans pour into the stands, Oceana's #ReuseForTheWin campaign is calling on Coca-Cola to replace single-use plastic bottles with reusable cups — one reusable cup can displace over 100 disposable ones and keep plastic out of the ocean. But plastic is not the only concern for our oceans. PHA member Mongabay highlights that an estimated 80% of sewage is discharged into waterways without treatment, threatening marine ecosystems and human health – a burden felt most severely in small island developing states, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and North Africa.
As global environmental shifts affect our daily lives, we are excited to announce a new resource to introduce Planetary Health concepts to younger learners. In partnership with the Educated Choices Program, we launched a free, open-access learning module: Planetary Health: Agriculture and the Anthropocene. The 17-minute video is available in seven languages, with accompanying worksheets, lesson plans, and homework.
